After appropriate investigations your doctor may prescribe a fertility drug to help you conceive. You may be taking one of the following:
Clomiphene (Clomid)
This is a synthetic anti-oestrogen which appears to induce ovulation by stimulating the release of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinising Hormone (LH). It is often used for women whose ovulatory mechanism is inadequate.
Gonadotrophins
Gonadotrophins substitute for the pituitary hormones FSH and LH. Their effectiveness depends on whether the ovaries are capable of being stimulated. Close medical supervision is essential as overstimulation of the ovaries may occur, resulting in the development of large ovarian cysts. There is also an increased risk of multiple births.
